Backup for Windowmaker Advanced and Enterprise

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Select the directory where your data resides, say 'D:\data5200'.
  3. Right-click the mouse and select 'Copy'.
  4. Browse to the directory where you want to save the data folder and right click and select ‘Paste’.
  5. You can also save the data to a writeable CD (CD-R or CD-RW), where you have an appropriate CD drive (a CDRW or DVDRW drive).
  6. Note: Always take the complete back up before doing any changes in the set-up of the Data.
Backup for Windowmaker Enterprise Client Server

Windowmaker Enterprise Client Server stores some data in SQL database on Microsoft SQL Server 2000. So, in addition to a back up of the data folder as mentioned above, you also need to take a back up of SQL database. Follow the steps mentioned below:
To Create Back-up:
  1. Run Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise manager.
  2. In the left frame/window, expand (click on "+" sign) Microsoft SQL Servers.
  3. Expand SQL Server Group.
  4. Expand '(Local)...’
  5. Expand Databases.
  6. Now on the database to be backed-up, right-click All Tasks | Backup Database.
  7. On the General Page, against 'Database:' select the name of database which you want to back-up.
  8. Against 'Name:' specify the name of the backup file which you are going to create.
  9. Click on Add button under Destination.
  10. Select 'File' and mention the name of backup file including the full path.
  11. Click OK to close the 'Select backup Destination' dialog.
  12. Click OK on 'SQL Server Backup' dialog to start the backup process
To Restore from Back-up:
  1. Copy the backup file onto the local drive of the server machine.
  2. Do steps 1 to 4 as in creating backup.
  3. Right click on Databases and select All Tasks | Restore Database.
  4. On the General Page, against 'Restore as database:’ mention the name of the new database, which you want to create from backup.
    NOTE: The file name should start with WM. Maximum length of 8 characters is permitted.
  5. Select ‘Restore:’ as 'From device'.
  6. Click on Select Devices button in Parameters group.
  7. Click on Add button on the 'Choose Restore Devices' dialog.
  8. Select the file name of the backup file from the local drive and click OK to close the 'Choose Restore Destination' dialog.
  9. Click OK to close the 'Choose Restore Devices’ dialog.
  10. Switch to the Options page, where you can see a table with two columns: 'Logical file name' and 'Move to physical file name'.
  11. Click on the first cell in second column, and edit location to have the correct path of the directory where the file is to be restored, retaining the file name. Note that the directory should be an already existing one.
  12. Similarly edit and specify the correct location in the second cell of second column as well.
  13. Click OK to start the Restore process.
In order to run WM on the restored database, please ensure that you edit the DMS.CFG in the data directory to correctly mention the server name as well as the database name.

Backup for Windowmaker Express and Windowmaker SQL

Windowmaker Express and SQL stores some data in SQL database on Microsoft SQL Server 2005. So, in addition to a back up of the data folder as mentioned above, you also need to take a back up of SQL database. Follow the steps mentioned below:
To Create Back-up:
  1. Run Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express.
  2. In the left frame/window, expand (click on "+" sign) of the Server on which the database to be backed-up resides.
  3. Expand Databases.
  4. Now on the database to be backed-up, Right click and go to Tasks| Backup.
  5. On the General Page, set the values for the fields as mentioned below:
  6. Database: name of the database to be backed-up.
  7. Backup Type: Full
  8. Backup component: Database
  9. Name: name of the backup file that will be created.
  10. Click on Add button under Destination .
  11. Select 'File' and mention the name of backup file including the full path.
  12. Click OK to close the 'Select backup Destination' dialog.
  13. Click OK on 'Back Up Database' dialog to start the backup process.
To Restore from Back-up:
  1. Copy the backup file onto the local drive of the server machine.
  2. Do steps 1 to 4 as in creating backup.
  3. Right click on Databases and go to Tasks | Restore | Database.
  4. On the General Page, enter the name of the database which you want to create from the backup file in ‘To database’ field.
    NOTE: The file name should start with WM. Maximum length of 8 characters is permitted
  5. Select ‘From Device’ in the Source for restore section.
  6. Click on
  7. 'Specify Backup’ dialog is invoked.
  8. Click ‘Add’.
  9. ‘Locate Backup File’ dialog is invoked. Select the file name of the backup file from the local drive and click OK to close the ‘Locate Backup File’ dialog.
  10. Click OK to close the 'Specify Backup’ dialog.
  11. In the ‘Select the backup sets to restore:’ section, select the above created option.
  12. Go to the ‘Options’ page.
  13. You will see a table with two columns: 'Original file name' and 'Restore As'.
  14. Click on the first cell in ‘Restore As’ column, and edit location to have the correct path of the directory where the file is to be restored, retaining the file name.
    Note that the directory should be an already existing one.
  15. Similarly edit and specify the correct location in the second cell of the same as well.
  16. Click OK to start the Restore process.
In order to run WM on the restored database, please ensure that you edit the DMS.CFG in the data directory to correctly mention the server name as well as the database name.
